Jack Russell Terrier
Jack Russell Terrier is a small dog that has its origins in fox hunting. It is typically a white-bodied and smooth, coarse or broken-coated dog, or can be of any color.
The Jack Russell is often confused with Parson Russell terrier and the Russell terrier, which is a smaller-leg, stronger breed. The term ‘Jack Russell’ is also usually misused for other small white terriers.
Jack Russell is an active dog breed that relies on a high level of exercises and stimulus activities. Thus remains comparatively free from serious health ailments. The breed got its name the ‘Jack Russell’ in the early 19th century when originating and used by Reverend John Russell. The breed has similar backgrounds like as modern Fox terrier. It has passed through a number of variations over the years. Jack Russell has looked several times in films, TV, and print with some other historical dogs.
Due to its working nature, Jack Russell Terrier always gets much tribute from its owners. Jack Russell Terrier is a broad type, healthy, strong, and stubborn dog. The normal size ranges between 10–15 inches (25–38 cm) at the withers, and average weight ranges between 14–18 pounds (6.4–8.2 kg).
Coat and Color
Mostly white in color with black, or brown, or bronzed markings, they show either a smooth, rough or a combination of both (broken coat). The broken-coated Jack Russell may have longer hair on the tail and skin can occasionally show a coloration of small black or brown spots (called Ticking) that don’t carry through to the outer coat. All coat varieties of Jack Russell are thick double coats that are neither silky nor woolly.
Differences with Related Breeds
The Parson Russell Terrier shares a common lineage with Jack Russell Terrier. Both breeds are similar, sharing a common origin, but have some noticeable changes such as range of standard heights, longer head, larger chest, and larger body size of Person Russell. The normal height of a Parson Russell according to breed standard ranges between 12–14 inches (30–36 cm) at the withers which places it within the range of Jack Russell Terrier.
Jack Russell Terrier Temperament
Jack Russell is the first and foremost working dog with high energy level, originally bred to bolt foxes from their lairs while hunting. The dog is used on various ground-dwelling prey such as groundhog, badger, and red and grey fox.
Working Jack Russell Terrier is used to hunt the quarry inside the earth holes, and then exhume it or hold it in place until they are exhumed. To complete the mission, the dog doesn’t bark but keeps attention to the prey continuously. Because of good working ability, Jack Russell is considered a very intelligent, athletic, fearless, and vocal dog. It is not uncommon for Jack Russel to become angry or destructive if not properly stirred and trained, as the dog has a tendency to bore easily, but sometimes makes its own fun when left alone to entertain themselves.
Training and Socialization
The highest vigor and drive make the Jack Russel an ideal fit for various dog sports such as flyball or agility. Obedience training is suggested to the owners, as the dog can be stubborn very often and hostile to other animals or persons if not well socialized.
Despite the small size, Jack Russel is recommended for house or room inhabitant unless the owner gives it a daunting task with necessary exercise and stimulation. The dog has great potential for its size which sometimes leads to trouble with larger animals. Jack Russell may look never to tire and will still be active after their owner has called it a day. While socialized members of this breed are friendly to kids, but they will not tolerate exploitation even if it is unintentional.
