Basset Hound
The Basset Hound is a small-leg dog breed from hounds-family with great sense of smell. The breed was initially produced for hunting hare. Basset Hounds are one of 6 familiar basset-type species in France. The name Basset comes from the French word bas,-et, which means "rather low". Basset Hounds are commonly bicolor or tricolors of standard hound tint.
The Basset Hound is a large, short, and lengthy dog, with rounded sabre tail held high over its lengthy back. The mature dog weigh ranges between 20 and 35 Kg (44 and 77 lbs.). The height of Basset doesn’t exceed 14 inches or 36cm. The size of this breed is heavier-boned than other breeds, and its hanging skin causes the face to sometimes look sad. The dewlap, looks loose and stretchy skin around the neck, and the sprawling ears are more logger than any other bloodhound breed. Its neck is broader than its head. The loose skin around neck results in facial wrinkles of Basset Hound.
The Basset’s small legs can be deceiving but the dog is amazingly long and can reach things quickly than other dogs of the same height. The Bassets are not good swimmers due to heavy body-weight and short legs and are unable to hold themselves above water for a very long time.
Basset Hound Coat
The short-haired coat of a Basset hound is long, suave and soft. Any color of such dog breed is acceptable, but it differs from country to country. They are generally in tricolors; black, tan and white, or sometimes tan and white bicolor. Some Bassets are also categorized as grey or blue, but this color is considered rare and unwanted.
Many Basset Hounds have different white glow and a white tip on the tail which help the hunters in finding their hounds under the bushes. Similar to other dogs, the coat of Basset Hound is naturally oily with a unique hound scent, which is natural to this dog breed.
