Golden Retriever
Golden Retriever is one of the most famous dog breeds in the United States. The dog’s friendly and lenient attitude makes him an excellent family pet, and its intelligence makes him an extremely proficient working dog. Golden Retrievers are the best at retrieving game for hunters, tracing, sniffing out drugs, and as therapy and supporting dogs. Golden Retrievers are natural athletes and perform well in dog sports such as agility and competitive obedience.
Golden Retrievers are large-sized dog breed reproduced as gun-dogs to retrieve water-birds such as ducks and game birds during hunting and shooting events and were called 'Retriever' because of their talent to retrieve shot-game safe due to their soft mouth as Golden Retrievers naturally love with water.
Lifespan
Like as other dog breeds, Golden Retrievers have plenty of energy and need sufficient exercises. The normal life of Golden Retriever ranges from 11 to 12 years.
Appearance
The Golden Retriever is a large, strongly powerful breed with a solid, water-repellant curly coat. Due to origins variability and prevalent historical popularity, three subtypes of Golden Retriever reveal some variations in dimensions and coat. These are:
British Golden Retriever
The British Golden Retriever was originally bred in Scotland. They are brawnier than North American varieties, with dense coats and heavier weights.
British Golden Retrievers are widespread in Europe and Australia. The skull is broader and the forequarters are extra powerful than in other types. The muzzle is balanced and well-shaped. The coat is normally lighter in color than in American types.
Size. The male size ranges from 22 – 24 inches (56 – 61 cm) at the withers and female size ranges from 20 – 22 inches (51 – 56 cm) at the withers.
Appearance. The eyes of British Golden Retrievers are round and dark, which is different from the triangular or slanted composition of American Retrievers. British Golden Retrievers can have a coat color of any shade of gold or cream. Golden Retrievers have strong bodies with great stamina, due to their origins as shooting and gundogs.
American Golden Retriever
Size. The American Golden Retriever is lankier and less powerful than other types. The male size ranges between 23 – 24 inches (58 – 61 cm) in height at the withers and female size ranges between 21.5 – 22.5 inches (55 – 57 cm) in height at the withers.
Coat and Color. The coat of American Golden Retriever is darker in color and found in various shades of shiny gold with modest feathering. When trotting, the dog has a free, attractive, powerful, and well-dressed walk; and when running the feet converge to the center of the line is balanced.
American Golden Retriever is similar to other national standards. Sometimes, the American breeders of Golden Retriever import their dogs from Great Britain to get the benefits of temperament and appearance of the British Retriever.
Canadian Golden Retriever
Size and Weight. Canadian Golden Retriever has a solid darker coat and stands larger than other types. The male size ranges between 23 – 24 inches (58 – 61 cm) in height at withers and female size ranges between 21.5 – 22.5 inches (55 – 57 cm). The weight for a male dog ranges between 29 – 34 kg (65 – 75 lbs.), and female weight ranges between 27 – 32 kg (60 – 70 lbs.).
Coat and Color. The coat color of the Canadian Golden Retriever occurs in light golden to dark golden. The top-coat is water resistant and somewhat curly, and the undercoat is soft and keeps the dog cool in summer and warm in winter. It habitually lies flat against the tummy.
Golden Retriever Temperament
Golden Retriever is naturally fond of swimming. The temperament of Golden Retriever is a symbol of the breed, and is defined in the standard of characteristics as ‘Kindly, friendly and confident’. Golden Retrievers are decent family pets because they are more tolerant of children. They are not "one man dogs" and are equal friendly with both strangers and familiars. Their tolerance and kind nature make them a poor guard-dog. The typical Golden Retriever is a peaceful, naturally intelligent, and obedient dog. The mature Golden Retrievers love to work on the assigned task with a good ability to focus on the job. They work until they collapse, so attention must be given to avoid over-tasking them.
Training
Golden Retrievers are easily trainable dogs due to their intelligence, athleticism and wish to satisfy their trainers. They are good competitors in agility and other routine events. Strict training methodology is not suitable for Golden Retrievers, as they usually respond very well to the positive training styles.
Compatible with Other Pets
The Golden Retrievers are friendlier with other pets like dogs, cats, and cattle. They are most appreciated for their high level of sociability with people, serenity, and willingness to learn. Due to these habits, they are normally used as guide-dogs, mobility helps dogs, and search and rescue dogs.
Activities
The Golden Retriever's willingness to satisfy the owner has made it a reliable and best performer dog. Its superb swimming skill also makes it proficient at dock-jumping. Due to a good trainable dog, Golden retriever is used for many significant tasks, such as guide-dogs for blind people, drugs or bomb sniffing at airports, and rescuing people from the earthquakes and disasters. Golden Retriever is also used in water-rescue missions for lifesaving, along with other rescue dogs.
